PhD Studentship, Soft Matter and Biological Physics

Project title: Soft Matter and Biological Physics

Anticipated start date for project: September 2013 for 4 years
Closing date for applications: The application process remains open until a suitably qualified candidate is successfully recruited.

Information about the project: A PhD studentship is available starting from the beginning of academic year 2013 (or as soon as possible) in Biological Physics, the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Manchester. The main objective is to improve our understanding of interactions of natural surface active biomolecules through innovative neutron reflection and scattering research. The new knowledge from this project will help bring natural and environment-friendly biomaterials into consumer goods, alleviating the current dominance of petrochemicals in manufacturing and formulation industry. The project will be jointly supervised by Dr John Webster (ISIS Neutron), Prof Jordan Petkov (Unilever Research Port Sunlight Lab) and Prof Jian R Lu (Manchester Biological Physics). The student will base his/her research at Manchester but will also undertake research and training at ISIS Neutron and Unilever Labs. The project thus provides a unique training opportunity for the student to learn how to link leading scientific research to business innovations.

Qualifications applicants should have/expect to receive: The successful candidate will have or expect to obtain a first or top upper second class degree or equivalent in a relevant degree (e.g. MPhys, MSci, MChem) in science, engineering and bioscience. Those with experimental/computational skills and enthusiasm for soft matter/biological physics are encouraged to apply.

Amount of funding available and eligibility: The project has been set up under the spirit of the STFC Futures Global Grand Challenge programme and is funded for the maximum period of 4 years through the collaborative agreement between ISIS Neutron Facility, Unilever and the University of Manchester. No prior experience of neutron research is required as a full package of training and support will be provided.

Project Supervisors: The project will be jointly supervised by Dr John Webster (ISIS Neutron), Prof Jordan Petkov (Unilever Research Port Sunlight Lab) and Prof Jian R Lu (Manchester Biological Physics).
