December 2013

The School of Biological Sciences at the University of Essex invites applications for British Heart Foundation funded PhD studentship. We are inviting applications from committed, talented individuals to study the molecular origins of heart disease using single-molecule imaging.

Mutations in key proteins, some associated with the control of cardiac muscle contraction, affect 1 in 500 people leading to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. This is recognised as the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young people. In our lab we have developed a unique in vitro single-molecule approach to determine how heart muscle is activated, by directly imaging this process in real time. We expect that this study will provide a molecular description of this disease from which novel treatments/screening can be developed.

We are looking for a bright and enthusiastic individual to complete a PhD in this area. The student will be involved with all aspects of research, ranging from protein purification to single-molecule imaging. The University of Essex houses all of the cutting-edge instrumentation required to complete this work.

Candidates for this highly prestigious studentship funded by the British Heart Foundation must be awarded or expect a 1st class or high 2:1 BSc (Hons) degree, or MSc with merit/distinction. A background of Biology, Chemistry or Physics related subjects would be beneficial. This three year PhD studentship carries a generous stipend, rising annually, starting at £19,919, due to funding restrictions Home/EU fees will be paid.

The closing date for this application is 7 February 2014.
