Applications are invited for a full-time PhD studentship in the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences funded jointly by the Sydney Driscoll Neuroscience Foundation and Brain Tumour North West. The studentship is tenable for up to 3 years for a PhD (via MPhil route) [subject to satisfactory progress]. The studentship will cover the cost of tuition fees for UK/EU residents plus a maintenance grant of £13,590 (2012/13 rate). International applicants may apply but will be expected to pay the difference between the UK/EU and International Fee Rate. The successful applicant will start on 1 October 2013.
Project Description A PhD studentship position is available in the group of Dr Tim Snape for an outstanding and ambitious chemistry graduate with a keen interest in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry as well as an interest in running biological assays. Funded jointly by the Sydney Driscoll Neuroscience Foundation and Brain Tumour North West, the successful applicant will undertake research at the boundaries of synthetic organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry. The work will involve the design and synthesis of small aromatic heterocycles which have the potential to kill malignant glioma cells. Building on previous chemistry already established (Timothy Snape et al., Bioorg. Med. Chem., 2013, 21, 1918-1924), the student will prepare a library of analogues and evaluate their preliminary activity in order to optimise the anticancer effects of these compounds.
You should have the potential to work under your own initiative and will be expected to interact productively with collaborators in the biosciences, so excellent communication and organisational skills are required.
Applicants should have, or expect to receive a minimum of UK 2:1 honours degree in Chemistry (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area. An interest in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry are essential. An interest in the biological evaluation of small molecules would be desirable.
