PhD Studentship - The Impact of British Media Art from the 1980’s on the Fine Art Curriculum

Applications are invited for: PhD Studentship

Funded by: CSAD and Coventry University

Fees: UK/EU fee equivalent for three years

Maintenance grant: £13,726 maintenance per annum (tax free)

Studentship academic contact: Professor Jill Journeaux

External collaborators - Possible collaborators include colleagues at the University of East London, and Sheffield Hallam University.

Details of proposed research:

The research student will undertake research on the topic of early British electronic art and lens based media, and its impact upon the development of fine art education in the UK in the 1980’s and beyond. The study will link the fine artists’ use of new technologies with the development of the notion of fine art as an expanded practice where media rather than discipline defines practices. It will consider the contribution made by the MA Electronic Art course that was pioneered in Coventry School of Art & Design and that later evolved into the MA Media Arts course and a range of artists’ initiatives including Housewatch. The project would include the identification and retrieval of archival materials, and conducting interviews with key British practitioners and fine art educators.

We anticipate that the direction of the project will draw from the experience and interests of the research student and the supervisory team. There will be an opportunity to contribute to a national symposium on The Impact of British Media Art from the 1980’s on the fine art curriculum.

Candidate specification

Please note that only UK/EU fee payers are eligible to apply

This is a re-advertisement- previous applicants need not reapply

Entry criteria for applicants to PHD

A minimum of a 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline/subject area with a minimum 60% mark in the Project element or equivalent with a minimum 60% overall module average.

In the event of a first degree classification of less than 2:1, a Masters Degree in a relevant subject area will be considered as an equivalent. The Masters must have been attained with overall marks at merit level (60%). In addition, the dissertation or equivalent element in the Masters must also have been attained with a mark at merit level (60%).

We would like to recruit a research student for this project who has undertaken undergraduate or postgraduate study in fine art practice, with experience of media art. Whilst we anticipate there may be an element of the research which draws upon this experience, this is not necessarily a topic that should be conceived as practice-based research as we expect many different types of data and research methods to be pertinent. Experience of studying art history, or media studies may also be useful.
