PhD Studentship - The Place of Painting

Funded by: Coventry University
Fees: UK/EU fee equivalent for three years
Maintenance grant:  £13,726 maintenance per annum (tax free)
Studentship academic contact: Professor  Judith Mottram

Details of proposed research:

The research student will undertake research on the topic of painting as a discipline within contemporary art. The question of how painting can continue as a vehicle for contemporary practice rests upon the matter of where to situate the engagement with the material and with the subjects of painting. As different forms and means of practice appear, what value frameworks are in operation and what role is taken by aesthetics or representation? These topics could be addressed from a range of perspectives and through the use of various methods. We anticipate that the direction of the project will draw from the experience and interests of the research student and the supervisory team. There may be an opportunity to contribute to an exhibition on The Place of Colour in Painting in 2017.

Candidate specification

Please note that only UK/EU fee payers are eligible to apply

This is a re-advertisement- previous applicants need not reapply

Coventry University standard entry criteria for applicants to PHD

We would like to recruit a research student for this project who has undertaken undergraduate or postgraduate study in fine art practice, with some prior experience of painting. Whilst we anticipate there may be an element of the research which draws upon this experience, this is not necessarily a topic that should be conceived as practice-based research as we expect many different types of data and research methods to be pertinent. Experience of studying art history, sociology, psychology or other humanities subjects may also be useful.
