Applications are invited for the above fully-funded three-year PhD studentship to join a dynamic and internationally renowned research team within the Faculty of Engineering, University of Nottingham. For home and EU applicants the studentship covers UK fees and provides a tax-free stipend of approximately £14k per annum. International students who have right of residence in the UK may also apply.
The project is funded by UTC Aerospace Systems and focuses on the vibration behaviour of state-of-the-art micro-engineered mechanical systems used as angular rate sensors. The main aim is to enhance sensor performance by developing mechanical designs with reduced levels of damping, and this will be achieved through the development and validation of models to understand and predict the damping arising from different physical mechanisms.
The project is expected to start September 2013 at the earliest, and the requirements for the studentship are that students:
(i)Â Should have, or expect to obtain, an upper second or first class undergraduate degree, or an MSc degree with either distinction or merit, or other indicators of excellent performance;
(ii)Â Can demonstrate a substantial amount of degree-level learning in general engineering and/or physics with a good knowledge of solid mechanics, dynamics and vibration. Mathematical modelling and computer programming skills would be an advantage.
This studentship will be supervised jointly by Dr Stewart McWilliam and Professor Atanas Popov. Informal enquiries prior to making an application may be addressed to: Dr Stewart McWilliam, email: Stewart.McWilliam@nottingham.ac.uk. If you are interested in making an application, please contact Dr McWilliam with a letter of application, CV and the names and addresses of two academic referees. Interviews will take place at the University of Nottingham.
Please quote ref. ENG/717.
The position will remain open until filled.
