A PhD studentship is available for a high calibre candidate to join a research team engaged in the development of modelling applications relevant to vibration reduction of automotive drivetrains. The Ph.D. student will join an established group investigating drivetrain oscillations and their repercussions on energy efficiency. The Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at Loughborough University has outstanding research facilities for powertrain dynamics, vibration engineering and numerical modelling. The Dynamics Research Group is engaged in numerous activities, being widely known for their contributions in numerical and experimental research applied to powertrains, tribodynamics of automotive systems, drivetrain engineering and Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH) phenomena. This project is in collaboration with the Linear and Nonlinear Dynamics and Vibrations Laboratory (LNDVL) at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC) and the Ph.D. student is expected to develop modelling techniques to reduce oscillations in drivetrain automotive applications using the Targeted Energy Transfer (TET) method.             Â
The candidates must be expecting, or have already obtained a first degree (1st class or high 2:1 honours or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, physics or other relevant subject. Good communication skills are essential and an interest in, and basic understanding of Engineering Dynamics and Vibrations is desirable.
The proposed starting date is 1st January 2014. Due to funding restrictions this three-year studentship is generally open to UK/EU students but applications from exceptionally talented overseas candidates will also be considered. The studentship will provide a maximum stipend of £13,726 per annum tax free (the exact amount depends on the fee status and experience) and UK/EU candidates would not be required to pay any tuition fees.
Please apply through the Apply link below. Applicants seeking additional information are invited to contact Dr Stephanos Theodossiades (e-mail S.Theodossiades@lboro.ac.uk).
