Applications are invited to undertake postgraduate research in the newly-established EPSRC Centre for Power Electronics at the University of Nottingham. These studentships represent an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and internationally-renowned research group currently numbering over 100 researchers.
Power electronics is a £135bn direct global market, growing at a rate of 10% per annum. It is essential to all future sustainable energy scenarios since it is the only technology that can deliver efficient and flexible conversion and conditioning of electrical energy. It finds application in many low-carbon applications including renewable energy generation, smart grids, electric transport (EV, HEVs, rail), aerospace, energy saving motor drives and lighting.
There are up to 6 PhD studentships to undertake research projects in the following research areas:
These studentships are suited to anyone with an interest in the technologies underpinning our future energy and transport systems and who is keen to tackle key research challenges facing the sector. The projects are multidisciplinary in nature and will be attractive to researchers from a range of science or engineering backgrounds. Students will need either a first class or upper second class honours degree in a relevant subject such as: mechanical or materials engineering, electrical or electronic engineering, physics, or a related subject. Prior knowledge of power electronics is not essential and training will be provided as required.
The studentships are available immediately for a period of three years, with a stipend of up to £18,000 per annum. Tuition fees are fully funded for UK and EU applicants (partially funded for international students).
Informal inquiries may be addressed to Professor Mark Johnson (mark.johnson@nottingham.ac.uk), Professor Jon Clare (jon.clare@nottingham.ac.uk) or Professor Chris Gerada (chris.gerada@nottingham.ac.uk).
