Applications are invited for up to three PhD studentship in the School of Engineering, Liverpool John Moores University. The studentships consist of a tax-free stipend (currently £13,726 per annum for the 2013-2014 academic year) and tuition fees at the UK/overseas rate, and are provided over a three-year period. We are seeking candidates with strong background and interest in one of the following areas, in which the School has well established research groups and advanced research facilities:
1.        VLSI devices (Microelectronics Research Group): The group has specialised in the characterisation and qualification of new materials and structures for nano-size CMOS and Flash memory devices for the last 20 years. Applications are invited in the areas of (i) Development of new characterization techniques for CMOS technologies and (ii) Development of resistive switching memories (ReRAM). The projects will use the tests samples supplied by industrial partners and the successful candidates will have the opportunity to work at IMEC. Informal enquiry should be directed to Prof Jian Zhang: j.f.zhang@ljmu.ac.uk
2.        Power electronics (Electric Machines and Drives Research Group): The research will be in the area of voltage source inverter topologies and PWM techniques for variable-speed multiphase (more than three phases) motor drives and in the area of multiphase wind energy generation systems for remote offshore wind farms. The applicants should have a background in electrical and electronic engineering, especially in the areas of power electronics, electric machines and variable speed drives, DSPs, and on-line control implementation. Informal enquiry should be directed to Prof. Emil Levi: e.levi@ljmu.ac.uk.
Detailed information regarding the research groups is available at http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/ENG/91782.htm. Applicants should hold (or expect to get) a good (first class or upper second class) Honours degree or Masters degree (or an overseas equivalent from a recognized University).
