Applications are invited for a research studentship in the field of graphene for multi-functional coatings and fibre-composites, leading to the award of a PhD degree. Due to funding restrictions the post is supported by a bursary and fees (at the UK/EU student rate) provided by Departmental scholarships.
The research will use graphene to improve the properties of current polymer-based materials, to improve or enable applications in functional coatings. The research will combine graphene materials with relevant matrices, especially epoxy/polyester resins, for the following applications: mould release and functional coatings for composite parts; lightning-strike protection and improved barrier-property coatings for fibre-composite aircraft and wind-turbine blades; tough, low permeability, scratch-resistant, and self-lubricating functional coatings for applications in pipe networks (including valves) and mechanical systems; and fire-resistant coatings by virtue of enhanced barrier properties and char formation. A further topic will consider high graphene-content polymeric coatings and composites. The research will be performed in collaboration with other departments at Imperial College.
You will be an enthusiastic and self-motivated person who meets the academic requirements for enrolment for the PhD degree at Imperial College London. You will have a background in Engineering, Materials Science or a related field and an enquiring and rigorous approach to research together with a strong intellect and disciplined work habits. Training will be given in materials manufacturing, characterisation and mechanical testing, and investigative techniques including electron microscopy. You will become a skilled communicator, comfortable in an international situation. Good team-working, observational and communication skills are essential.
