Applications are invited for two PhD studentship, available from 1 March 2014 in the âFire Materials Research' team based at the Institute for Materials Research & Innovation (IMRI) at the University of Bolton. The two inter-related projects are in collaboration with William Blythe Ltd UK and Cotton Industry War Memorial Trust UK; and supported by Knowledge Centre for Materials Chemistry (KCMC).
Over the last 4 years, the University of Bolton has undertaken research in collaboration with William Blythe Ltd, in order to study the effectiveness of their Flamtard (zinc stannates) range of flame retardants in a range of polymer systems in combination with brominated and phosphorus containing flame retardants. The purpose of these two PhD projects is to build on these experiences, understand the mechanisms of action of the existing systems and develop new systems. The themes of two PhD studentships are:
Studentship 1: Mechanistic Study of Synergism of Zinc Stannates with Flame Retardants
Studentship 2: Development of Novel Environmentally Sustainable Surface Coatings for Textiles
Applicants should have a minimum 2.1 class undergraduate degree or a relevant Masters degree or equivalent experience in a relevant Physical Sciences/Engineering discipline. Studentship 1 especially will demand an acceptable level of chemistry within his/her qualification(s).
IMRI has a strong national and international reputation, and is supported by access to state-of-the-art infrastructure including materials processing and flammability testing facilities, clean room, nanomaterials characterisation, textiles and composites laboratories, complemented by a suite of materials modelling capabilities.
Each student will receive UK/EU tuition fees and a tax free bursary of at least £13,590 per annum for 3 year duration of the project. International applicants may apply but will be expected to pay the difference between the UK/EU and International Fee Rate.
Closing date for applications is 31 December 2013.
