The University of Nottinghamâs Faculty of Engineering is one of the premier engineering faculties in the UK. The Faculty conducts research that has been recognised by the last Research Assessment Exercise as being world-leading or internationally excellent, placing Nottingham in the UKâs top five universities for engineering. The Faculty is a vibrant and supportive environment and provides state-of-the art experimental and computational facilities.
Applications are invited for 3 fully funded research studentships (3 or 4 years) in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham. The successful candidates will be part of a team investigating thermofluid issues related to energy generation.
The studentships are funded by a combination of UK research council and industrial funding. The successful candidates will be working with Dr Carol Eastwick and a team of academic supervisors relevant to the industrial application. Dr Eastwick has been working with the energy generation sector to reduce pollution and improve efficiency across multiple platforms ranging from electrical motor/generator sets to coal-fired thermal power stations. The studentships will focus on the modelling of thermofluids in industrial scale problems, ranging from the storage of hydrogen, through the cooling of electrical generators to the modelling of solid fuel milling. The studentships would suit those with strong analytical or mathematical modelling skills who wish to work in an industrial context.
Students should have, or expect to obtain, a first-class or good 2:1 honours degree, or a distinction or high merit at MSc level in mechanical/manufacturing engineering, chemical engineering, mathematics, physics or a closely related discipline.
The studentships will cover PhD tuition fees and a tax free stipend for three years (£13,726 for the 2013-14 academic year) for UK/EU students, due to funding restrictions or in the case of an application for EngD fees and tax free stipend for four years (£20,000 for the 2013/14 academic year). The studentships are expected to start in September/October 2013.
Informal enquiries prior to making an application may be addressed to: Dr Carol Eastwick, email carol.eastwick@nottingham.ac.uk.Â
If you are interested in making an application, please contact Dr Carol Eastwick directly, via the âApplyâ button below, with a covering letter stating clearly how you fulfil the requirements of the studentship, and include a CV and the names and addresses of two academic referees.
