Swansea University's College of Engineering invites applications for a Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO) funded MRes project as part of the Steel Training Research and Innovation Partnership (STRIP).
About the project:
Applications are invited for a MSc in Physics by Research Outreach Bursary in the area of developing ultrafast electron diffraction. The successful applicant will have a major involvement in the design and demonstration of a state-of-the-art experimental apparatus, modelling charged particle dynamics and the engineering of microscopic test samples.
Research Summary:
The impact of electron microscopy and diffraction is clearly established, facilitating unprecedented imaging of matter on atomic length scales. We are developing ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) and ultrafast electron microscopy (UEM), whereby an exceptionally sharp metal point or nanotip illuminated with a very short laser pulse generates coherent pulses of electrons. These electrons pass through samples in the liquid or solid phase forming an image or diffraction pattern, and photon-initiated variations in this pattern allow time-resolved measurements of structure and dynamics on the atomic length and timescales. It is anticipated the development of this novel technique will lead to an instrument capable of recording a ?movie? not only of individual atoms moving, but of electrons moving between atoms.
Outreach Summary:
All elements of research will inform curriculum development and teaching for Swansea University?s S4 Physics Programme, and a significant enthusiasm and interest in physics outreach is essential.

Candidate eligibility:
- Scholarships are available only to new Master's applicants who are UK/EU categorized students.
- Applicants should hold (or be expecting to achieve) a minimum of a first class or 2.1 (Hons) degree (or equivalent) in Physics.
Studentship value: This bursary covers full UK/EU tuition fees plus a maintenance grant of ?6,070.
