The UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies represents the largest concentration in the United Kingdom of research expertise in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, including Russia. The SSEES research community consists of 80 postgraduate students and more than 40 full-time academic members of staff. The range of research undertaken at SSEES includes politics, economics, sociology, literature, culture, history, and anthropology. There are thus potential supervisors available for most of the region and for most of the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences. The possibility of joint supervision (within SSEES or with supervisors drawn from other UCL departments) extends the range of area and disciplinary combinations possible at doctoral level.
In addition to postgraduate research leading to a doctorate, SSEES also offers one- and two-year programmes leading to the award of Master of Research (MRes). Details of the MRes programmes available at SSEES are given on http://www.ssees.ucl.ac.uk/prospect/masters.htm .Â
The application procedure for admission to research degrees is given on http://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/graduate-study/application .
Students interested in applying for funding should be aware that competition is intense. Success depends not only upon an outstanding academic record and excellent academic references but also upon a considered, well-written, and hence convincing research proposal. Such a proposal should be written (and revised) in consultation with your prospective supervisor. A list of staff and their research interests is available on http://www.ssees.ucl.ac.uk/staffresearch.htm .
