Applications are invited for full-time Postgraduate Teaching Assistant (PTA) scholarships leading to the degree of PhD, commencing in September 2014. Successful applicants will receive a maintenance grant and teaching payment (currently £13,460 per year) and tuition fees paid at the UK/EU rate. A bursary reducing the overseas fee to home fee rate may also be awarded to suitably qualified applicants on a competitive basis.
Birmingham Law School welcomes applicants with research interests in any field of law or a law-related subject. Research proposals are welcomed from the full range of perspectives, including: comparative, doctrinal, historical, international, theoretical, ethical, socio-legal and criminological approaches to law. Full details of the research and supervision interests of academic staff in Birmingham Law School are available on the Schoolâs website (www.birmingham.ac.uk/law). Prospective applicants are encouraged to make contact with a prospective supervisor prior to making a formal application to study.
The funding for these PTA scholarships will be available for one year in the first instance, extended for a second and then third year providing there has been satisfactory performance in both teaching and research. To be eligible for these awards, candidates must hold either an offer of a place to study or have submitted an application to study at the University.
Those appointed PTAs will normally be expected to teach approximately 60 hours of small-group seminars on an undergraduate law module per year, and hold regular office hours. PTAs are valued members of the Birmingham Law School teaching staff. Training and mentoring in teaching and learning in higher education will be provided.
Benefits of Becoming a PTA
By the end of their time in the School, PTAs can expect to have made good progress in the craft of university teaching and have a research degree. Many PTAs have used their experience as a stepping stone to taking up full-time academic appointments on completion of their PhDs.
