Research Engineer with Enviance & the University of Surrey Responses to regulatory pressure in the utilities and oil/gas sectors: strategies for sustainability

The University of Surrey hosts a prestigious EPSRC-funded Industrial Doctorate Centre offering an EngD in Sustainability for Engineering and Energy Systems (SEES). The SEES EngD is a four-year doctorate for researchers who aspire to key leadership positions in industry. The programme is academically equivalent to a PhD, but has one major difference; the student (or ‘Research Engineer’) spends the majority of their time based with a sponsor organisation, working on their commercial research priorities. They return to the University for short courses, conferences and seminars designed to develop specialist technical knowledge and exceptional business skills.

The EngD studentship is available with Enviance Inc. in Camberley, Surrey. Enviance is the leading provider of Environmental ERP software. With more than a decade providing environmental data management and expertise,

Enviance's proven system is used by the world's largest business organisations and government agencies including Chevron Corporation, DuPont, Fujifilm and Syngenta.

This project will target organisations in the utilities sector (including energy, water and transport operations) and oil/gas sector (upstream, midstream and downstream, including exploration, refining and supply). The project will compare and contrast responses to regulation within and between these sectors. Examples of companies who may be approached to take part include BP, Chevron, Thames Water and United Utilities.

The project will address the following questions:

  • How has legislation affected each sector over the past 20 years? What are the key trends?
  • To look forward to the future: how might legislation and the regulatory context change? What is likely to drive this?
  • What strategies are used by companies in relation to regulation e.g. compliance driven or more proactive?
  • What are the benefits and drawbacks of these strategies? What risks are involved and how is their management influenced by organisational strategy
  • Which strategies lead to better performance in managing EHS risks?
  • What does this infer about encouraging best practice in managing risk and encouraging compliance? How can organisations encourage sustainable outcomes?

The Research Engineer will be based at Enviance in Camberley, Surrey.

Person Specification We are looking for a self-motivated individual with exceptional interpersonal skills who has the ability to adapt to working in a remote team across multiple destinations. The suitable candidate will be an engineer/scientist with a good understanding of environmental issues, risk management and business strategy. He/She will have some experience of project management and be able to demonstrate analytical thinking and a logical approach to problem solving. The successful candidate will have the ability to engage with technical detail and be able to identify and evaluate other influencing factors surrounding a problem (e.g. from economic, political and social structures). He/She will then adjust this to a strategic level of thinking. The post requires a good bachelor’s degree (2.1 or better) and preferably a relevant MSc.

Funding Details: The current stipends for EngD studentships are £19,900 per annum (normally tax-free). To be eligible for funding, applicants must demonstrate a relevant connection with the UK, in compliance with EPSRC eligibility criteria (available on the SEES IDC website).
