School of Clinical Sciences - Division of Rheumatology, Nottingham City Hospital
Applications are invited from Home/EU students (due to funding restrictions) with a 2.1 UK degree or equivalent in epidemiology (or related applied science discipline relevant to this study) for a studentship funded by the University of Nottingham.
This studentship will contribute to the Footballer Study which forms part of the research activities of the recently created Arthritis Research UK Centre for Sport, Exercise & Osteoarthritis. This is an observational study which will determine whether professional footballers are at increased risk of knee, hip and foot osteoarthritis. The study will involve a large postal questionnaire to current and retired professional footballers in the UK. A sample of responders will be requested to attend for radiographs of knees, hips and feet and the prevalence of osteoarthritis at these three sites will be compared to data from established large UK cohorts. The successful candidate will agree the details of their PhD question in collaboration with their supervisors.
This studentship will be supervised jointly by Prof Michael Doherty and Dr Weiya Zhang and will be supported by a Research Associate/Fellow. Based in the Division of Academic Rheumatology, Nottingham City Hospital, the student will join a vibrant, multidisciplinary team focused on furthering our understanding of osteoarthritis.
The successful student will be registered for a PhD; the studentship is available from 1 October 2013 for a period of three years and provides fees at the H/EU rate and a postgraduate stipend of £13,726 in year 1 with increments in line with Research Council Rates.Â
Informal enquires may be addressed to Prof M Doherty, Tel: 0115 8231754 or Email: michael.doherty@nottingham.ac.uk.
Students should send a detailed CV, together with the names and addresses of three referees, to Mrs Helen Richardson, Division of Academic Rheumatology, Clinical Sciences Building, Nottingham City Hospital, Nottingham. NG5 1PB. Email helen.richardson@nottingham.ac.uk, via the 'Apply' button below.
