Research Postgraduate Scholarship in Sociology

The aim of this research is to investigate the working lives of Benefit Officers in the context of benefit reforms in austerity Britain. This project will study workers whose job it is to deal face-to-face with claimants, the skills required and the experience of that work. Supervisors for the studentship are Professor Tracey Warren and Dr Simon Roberts (University of Nottingham) and Dr Clare Lyonette (University of Warwick). The full scholarship is for four years 1+3: MA (1 year) followed, conditional on achievement of at least a merit in the MA, by a PhD (3 years). The scheme is open to Home and EU candidates who meet the ESRC’s usual residency guidelines, which can be found in their Postgraduate Funding Guide. The studentship covers a full time tax free stipend at current RCUK rates (£14,057 for 2015/16, updated each year), plus tuition fees and additional research funds to cover the costs of additional training, conference attendance and fieldwork. Entry is for October 2016. Students must have a good undergraduate degree (2:1 or higher) in Sociology or a related social sciences discipline.
