3-year SAMSUNG Global Research Outreach (GRO) funded D.Phil (PhD) studentship, available from January 2014 (subject to eligibility requirements below).
Research Area
The project will focus on the development of novel nanostructured materials based on Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) with target applications in microelectronics, lighting, and sensing applications. Thin-film structures, coatings, and nanocomposites comprising multifunctional MOF materials will be designed and fabricated to yield 2-D and 3-D architectures featuring numerous structural topologies and chemical functionalities. Central to successful device integration, fundamental properties encompassing the electrical, electronic, thermo-mechanical, and optical characteristics of novel systems will be interrogated using state-of-the-art scanning probe microscopy, spectroscopy and fine-scale nanoindentation. Laboratory experiments will be complemented by theoretical simulations and in situ studies at large science facilities (e.g. Diamond Light Source and ISIS at Harwell, Oxford) to gain insights into fundamental structure-property relationships underpinning future device performance.
The studentship is part of a SAMSUNG GRO funded project on "Next-Generation Metal-Organic Framework Materials" being jointly undertaken by the University of Oxford (Principal Investigator: Dr J.C. Tan) and SAMSUNG Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT).
The student will be a member of the Solid Mechanics and Materials Engineering (SMME) Research Group and will be supervised by Dr J.C. Tan. Further information on the group can be found at http://www.eng.ox.ac.uk/tan
Award Value
The studentship covers University fees at the level set for either Overseas or UK/EU students plus provides a stipend (tax-free maintenance grant) of £13,590 p.a. for the first year, and at least this amount for a further two years. The studentship also covers the payment of college fees.
Eligibility
The project studentship is available to all applicants from Overseas or UK/EU.
