Innovation frequently depends on the interplay between many organizations across different industries and institutional environments. Such innovation ecosystems of interdependent organizations are characterised by wide dispersion of adequate knowledge, open nature of collaboration and ever increased role of wider society in shaping innovation. This is especially true for innovation that is driven by addressing grand societal challenges such as sustainability, environmental and health. This PhD project will focus on exploring how openness and institutional diversity in innovation ecosystems affect strategic behaviour of innovative organizations. The selected researcher will aspire to complete a PhD that combines insights from strategic management, innovation management and organisational theory. The candidate will be motivated to work closely with companies and be willing to engage in outreach activities that popularize the importance of innovation in the region. Our Centre for Technology and Entrepreneurship (cTIE) has developed significant expertise in the area of Strategic Management of innovation by leading the EU-funded Marie Curie Initial Training Network in Management of Emergent technologies for Economic Impact and involvement with the EPSRC sponsored Innovation and Knowledge Centre in Health technologies. The postgraduate researcher undertaking the PhD will be supervised by Professor Krsto Pandza and will benefit from our intellectually vibrant cTIE research community.
