About the award
The College of Social Sciences and International Studies at Exeter is offering a fully funded studentship for a Home / EU student studying for an MPhil / PhD programme in the newly formed Strategy and Security Institute (SSI).

The SSI is a new, innovative, policy facing interdisciplinary research centre which has just established a new graduate research programme in strategy and security. The SSI has an ambitious research agenda, and with strong links with other University departments offers the opportunity for a PhD candidate to work in an exciting and truly interdisciplinary environment.

This prestigious award is worth over Â£52,000, and includes:

Direct payment of tuition fees (at the standard UK/EU rate)
Maintenance allowance for accommodation and living expenses of around Â£13,590 per annum.

Research areas
The SSI invites applications from students interested in undertaking PhD study into contemporary global security issues such as:

Integrated approaches to conflict prevention and management
Changing character of contemporary conflict
International efforts to stabilise failed, failing or fragile states
Gulf and Middle East security
Decision-making and leadership
Strategy and security in the contemporary world including intelligence
Defence reform and strategy in the context of wider public policy
Science, technology and security policy
Humanitarian intervention and laws of armed conflict
Civil-military relations and security sector governance
Arms control and proliferation
US-European security and defence relations, and the role and future of NATO
Domestic security, public resilience and counter-terrorism
The politics of defence industrial consolidation in Europe and the United States
Ethics of the use of armed force
