Studentship Available The Control of Cardiovascular Disease by Tribbles-1

Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health

Supervisor: Dr Endre Kiss-Toth & Dr Sheila Francis (Department of Cardiovascular Science) and Professor Daniel Rader (University of Philadelphia)

Project:  Outstanding graduate scientists are invited to apply for a PhD Studentship funded by the Fundation Leducq and the University of Sheffield to study the role of tribbles-1 in the development of cardiovascular disease. Tribbles-1 is an anti-inflammatory gene, which was recently identified in human genetic studies as a risk factor in hyperlipidaemia and in myocardial infarction. Our focus is now on uncovering the role this protein plays in tissues relevant to the development of human disease with a long term aim to therapeutically target tribbles-1. This cross-disciplinary project will involve collaborations with cardiologists, vascular scientists, molecular and cell biologists. The student will spend a significant period in Philadelphia and take advantage of the advanced in vivo genetic models of cardiovascular disease available in Prof. Rader’s lab.

The studentship includes funding for stipend, and tuition fees at ‘home rate’; running cost will be provided by the host laboratories. The student will be encouraged to publish in high-quality, international journals and will have the opportunity to attend national and international scientific conferences to present novel findings.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants should possess a good honours degree or equivalent in biochemistry, cell biology or a related discipline. Previous experience with in vivo disease models and/or vascular cell biology would be an advantage.

Funding:

Stipend: starts at £13,726

Fees: funded at the UK/EU level
