Ted Powers PhD Studentships in Innovation Design Engineering

Closing Date: 19th April 2013

The Innovation Design Engineering programme at the Royal College of Art invites applications for three fee-waived (maintenance not included) practice based PhD studentships in design research from suitably qualified home status students.

The PhD programme offers candidates the opportunity to study with expert practitioners and research staff from the Innovation Design Engineering programme alongside college-wide experts in a wide range of Art and Design research fields. More information on IDE research can be found at IDE Research (http://www.rca.ac.uk/Default.aspx?ContentID=159961&GroupID=160473&More=1).

Proposals for the three practice based PhD studentships are broadly invited into our three research areas of Experimental Design, Disruptive Market Innovation and Design Enterprise/Sustainability. Candidates for the studentships must have a high quality Honours Degree (preferably first class) or a Masters qualification or equivalent and the PhD studentships will commence in October 2013. Recent candidates have entered IDE Research from Architecture, Biotechnology, Engineering, Product Design Engineering, Virtual Reality, Industrial Design, Graphics and Branding, Programming, Textiles, User Centred Design and Space Studies backgrounds. Each studentship is worth £9,000 per year for full time study (part time study at pro rata) and is supported from the Ted Powers Foundation. Please note that successful applicants will initially be registered on the MPhil programme, unless they already hold an MPhil degree.

Your proposal (max. 1,500 words) should cover the following:

  • Summary of the research topic and objectives
  • What is your research question and the new knowledge you expect to identify?
  • What methods will you use to address the research question?
  • How do you see your work in the wider context of the discipline? How does it relate to existing work in the area?
  • What is the motivation, relevant skills, knowledge and experience that you bring?
  • An indicative bibliography.
  • A provisional timeline (key dates and work only)
  • You can include a PDF of related practice based work (Max size 5Mb)

Please send draft proposals to IDE Deputy Head of Programme (ashley.hall@rca.ac.uk) for initial review by April 8th. Applicants will then be requested to apply using the normal RCA online application process by 19th April 2013 (marking their application “Ted Powers Studentship” in the personal statement section). Successful proposals will be invited to interview in May 2013.
