Two fully-funded PhD studentships in medical imaging are available through a collaborative project between the Engineering Tomography Laboratory (ETL) at the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Bath and the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) in Switzerland. Â
High-precision radiotherapy requires accurate tumour localization. However, respiratory motion makes it difficult to accurately target the tumour. This project aims to make a proof of principle of a hybrid system combining electrical impedance tomography (EIT) and X-ray CT for motion-compensated image reconstruction for applications such as lung radiation therapy. The successful applicants will build a dynamic lung phantom and develop finite element models based on diagnostic CT imaging with the goal of incorporating the latter in a dual-modality system that would employ EIT during radiotherapy treatment. They can expect to visit other researchers in the field under the supervision of CERN's Life Sciences Advisor.
Required Profile The successful candidate must have a Masters qualification in Engineering, Physics or Mathematics. Programming skills in Matlab and C/C++ are required. A background in areas such as tomographic imaging, inverse problems, finite element analysis, and image processing and electronic design is desired.
The project will be based at the University of Bath and the funding covers the UK/EU fee and a stipend of £13,726 per annum for 3.5 years.Â
