Limit of tenure: 3 Years.
A fully-funded 3-year PhD studentship is available for students who meet the residency requirements of the UK Research Councils: http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/students/studentregistry/fees/funding/councils/eligibility.html
Due to the funding regulations of this studentship, we are not able to consider applications from overseas students or UK/European nationals who do not qualify for the full award.
The studentship is available to work on a highly innovative project developing a radically different method of manufacture in chemical industries. This project is addressing the key challenge of the Dial-a-Molecule EPSRC Grand Challenge Network: how to manufacture new chemical species rapidly and sustainably: https://connect.innovateuk.org/web/dial-a-molecule1
The key research challenge for this project is to develop the fast auto-optimisation of a wide range of synthetic processes against a variety of requirements (yield, cost, sustainability, impurities etc). The envisaged autonomous system will bring together automated hardware for reaction execution, reaction composition data acquisition and analysis, selection of next experiment(s) to be done and development of process models in real time.
Specifically this PhD project will involve analysis of experimental results obtained in multi-sensor auto-optimised reactor system in order to develop phenomenological process models (kinetics, mass and heat transfer phenomena, etc).
The project will be supervised by Alexei Lapkin, Professor of Sustainable Reaction Engineering (current web page: http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/eng/research/process/suspro)
Eligibility:
-Â This studentship is only open to students who met the criteria as per the UK Research Councils: http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/students/studentregistry/fees/funding/councils/eligibility.html
-Â Applicants should have a First Class (or a high 2:1) degree in a relevant discipline and will suit a candidate passionate about sustainable processes, reaction engineering, mathematics and modeling.
- If nominated for the studentship, the applicant will be expected to formally apply for admission as a graduate student with the University Admissions Office and satisfy any conditions of admission that they set forth. Additional information may be found at: http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/prospec/
