The project:Â Our ability to fully exploit new molecular and genetic technologies in epidemiology depends on a new generation of inter-disciplinary scientists who can harness the benefits of these technologies in exciting and productive ways. This innovative four-year PhD programme equips students with the knowledge and technical skills to achieve this.
The School of Social & Community Medicine has established a 4 year PhD Programme in Molecular, Genetic and Lifecourse Epidemiology funded by the Wellcome Trust.
The programme aims is to equip epidemiologists with the technical skills and training to exploit rapidly developing new technologies in molecular and genetic sciences within population-based cohorts in ways that could significantly improve our understanding of causal pathways in disease and its progression.
Your PhD will consist of a 1st year of 10 week attachments in:
The rotations are integrated with a choice of 1-5 day Short Courses, which you will select on the basis of experience and training needs. You will also have the opportunity to attend external specialist courses and international meetings. Years 2-4 are spent undertaking your PhD research.
All of your studies will be at the University of Bristol, a leading UK research university. The university is near the centre of Bristol, a vibrant and leading UK city.
The School of Social & Community Medicine offers an integrated approach to postgraduate education in a collaborative and multidisciplinary environment. It complements parallel PhD programmes at the University in Dynamic Cell Biology, Neural Dynamics and Complex Networks.
Candidate requirements: Our aim is to attract outstanding and highly motivated science graduates, who are excited by the revolution in molecular and genetic epidemiology. You will have a good honours (minimum requirement is a 2.1) or Masters degrees in a relevant discipline, and wish to pursue a career in molecular, genetic or lifecourse epidemiology.
Funding: The Wellcome Trust provides support for four years and includes a stipend (starting at £19,919), PhD registration fees at UK/EU student rate, research expenses, travel and transferable-skills training.
International students would need to first secure alternative sources of funding to cover the overseas fees for 4 years.
How to apply: Applications are invited from November 2013 for studentships starting in October 2014. Applications should be completed online at http://www.bris.ac.uk/pg-howtoapply by clicking on the Apply button below.
