The Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) is currently accepting applications for the Hanmun (Classical Chinese) Fellowship – Advanced Course. This prestigious program is designed to support international scholars in deepening their knowledge of Hanmun (Classical Chinese) within the broader field of Korean Studies.
As part of AKS’s commitment to advancing and globalizing Korean Studies, the fellowship offers:

Expert-led lectures and recitations

Research opportunities in Hanmun and Korean history

On-site cultural tours and academic experiences at the AKS campus in South Korea
Participants will explore a variety of classical texts such as Mencius, Selected Readings of the Hundred Schools of Thought, Classical Chinese Poetry, and more.
Eligibility Criteria for the 2025 AKS Hanmun Fellowship
To qualify for the AKS Hanmun Fellowship – Advanced Course, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Be an undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral student majoring in Korean Studies at an overseas university (including those currently pursuing or awaiting conferral of a master's or PhD degree).

Korean nationals and graduates of Korean universities are not eligible to apply.

Must have completed at least one basic Hanmun (Hanja) course.

Must possess advanced Korean language proficiency, as all instruction will be delivered in Korean.
Selection Process

Document screening will be conducted to shortlist eligible candidates.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a video interview, scheduled between April 29 and May 8, 2025. Interview times will be adjusted based on applicants’ local time zones.

Final results will be communicated via email on May 13, 2025.
Required Documents
Applicants must prepare and submit the following materials:

Completed application form (available for download on the AKS website)

Certificate of enrollment or program completion
-
Letter of recommendation from an academic advisor, explaining the importance of Hanmun study for the applicant

TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) score report – if available
-
Proof of basic Hanmun (Hanja) course completion, which can be one of the following:

A university transcript or certificate showing completion of a Hanmun course

An AKS Hanmun Fellowship Certificate of Completion
All submitted documents must be in Korean or English. If issued in another language, they must be accompanied by a notarized translation.
Benefits of the 2025 AKS Hanmun Fellowship
Successful applicants to the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) Hanmun Fellowship will receive the following support:

Round-trip airfare (economy class)

A monthly living stipend of 750,000 KRW

On-campus accommodation at the AKS Guesthouse

Fellowship Duration
The program will take place from September 1 to December 19, 2025.
