BACKGROUND
The Urban Water research group at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural resources engineering at Luleå University of Technology seeks to employ a driven and committed PhD student within focus on future sewers.
SUBJECT DESCRIPTION
Urban Water Engineering encompasses the entire urban water system (storm drains, drinking water supply and waste water) with respect to collection, transport and treatment, as well as organisation and planning. The research aims to encourage a strong economy, clean environment and the wise use of resources, while preserving the publics health and safety.
The Urban Water research group has a strong position regarding research and education within the area of urban water systems mainly concerning the areas of stormwater, wastewater and sewer systems. The groups overall aim is to contribute to the development of sustainable urban water systems. Being a part of the Urban Water research group implies working in an international and creative environment. The group consists of a number of senior researchers, adjunct professors and about ten doctoral candidates. The group has an extensive international collaboration network.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Storm&Sewers (Dag&Nat) is a competence network in which LTU, municipal urban water organizations and Swedish Water and Wastewater Association are cooperating within the areas of research and education and with special focus on stormwater and sewers. In the project for this PhD position, the research will be carried out together with the municipal partners. The overall aim of the project is to contribute with knowledge about future design and renewal of the system. Objectives to be considered are evaluation of sewer construction and renewal with respect to e.g. resource efficiency and environmental effects. Later, strategies for future design of sewers in combination with green infrastructure will be developed.
DUTIES
The work will contain both field work and theoretical studies and be planned and performed by the PhD student. Furthermore, writing scientific articles and the thesis as well as take university courses for PhD students, and participate and present the work at conferences in Sweden and internationally are also important duties. The PhD studies are 4 years, fulltime. Administration and/or lecturing on basic and advanced level of up to 20 % may be added.
QUALIFICATIONS
We seek a candidate with a MSc degree or other advanced degree or fully completed course requirements of at least 240 ETCS of which at least 60 ETCS are at an advanced level or equivalent. The degree should be within the field of water & environment, natural resources engineering, civil engineering, or equivalent. English language skills are required since the research results will be presented at international conferences and in scientific journals. Further skills needed are the ability to work independently and take own initiatives as well as being able to alone penetrate new research areas. Knowledge in the field of sanitary/urban water engineering and statistics, are meriting as well as knowledge in the Swedish language. It is also meriting if you hold a driving license since this will facilitate during field work.
