The Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine & Dentistry are seeking to attract PhD candidates of outstanding ability to join their exciting and rapidly expanding programme of internationally-rated research.Â
As part of our new developments i.e expanding the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine & Dentistry and our commitment to research excellence, applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates, 2:1 or above, for a PhD Studentship. International students must also have score of 7.0 or above (or equivalent qualification).
Alzheimerâs disease (AD) accounts for an estimated 60~80% of all dementia cases, and affects memory, thinking, mood and daily activities. Currently no treatment is available to slow or stop AD once established, thus discovery of sensitive biomarkers for early diagnosis is of utmost importance but this remains a major challenge in AD study.
In this multidisciplinary project, you will be studying and applying the cutting edge   machine learning methodologies, combined with statistical methods to discover biomarkers for early AD diagnosis. Novel models will be developed to integrate genetics and genomics information for biomarker discovery by using the existing and fresh datasets. You also have opportunities to develop state-of-the-art graphene array biosensor platforms targeted on AD biomarkers for clinical application.
The project will be jointly supervised by Dr. Xinzhong Li of Peninsula Medical School, Prof. Genhua Pan and Prof. Emmanuel Ifeachor of School of Computing and Mathematics.
Students should have an academic background in electronic engineering, physics, mathematic / statistics, bioinformatics with strong computer skills, those from biomedical science background with strong analytical skills are also encouraged to apply. You should have the ability to work independently, with effective written and oral communication skills.

Funding Notes:
The stipend will be £13,726 (based on full time 13/14 rate). Tuition fees will be paid at the home/EU rate. Candidates from countries outside the European Union will be liable for the difference between 'home student fees' and 'international student feesâ. For the 13/14 academic year the difference in fee is £10,150. If you are selected you will be required to provide financial assurances.
