The ESRC Northwest Doctoral Training Centre (NWDTC) offers a new approach to postgraduate training within the economic and social sciences. Combining the academic and research strengths of the Universities of Lancaster, Liverpool and Manchester, the NWDTC provides flexible options for applicants seeking Masters and PhD opportunities.
The Psychology pathway of the NWDTC invites applications for its 1+3 (Masters-PhD) and +3 (PhD) studentships commencing October 2013. Outstanding Masters and PhD candidates seeking to further their research training in the psychological sciences are encouraged to apply, with opportunities available across all three partner institutions. Training opportunities span the following areas:
- Child and language development
- Clinical and health psychology
- Cognition and cognitive neuroscience
- Social, forensic and individual political behaviour
Training within the NWDTC is truly inter-disciplinary, offering opportunities to explore psychology as it applies to the social, medical, health and political sciences. Successful candidates would benefit from the expertise of supervisory teams, often comprising individuals across the partner institutions, as well as opportunities to experience research in a combination of distinctive environments. With dedicated Masters training providing an excellent foundation for developing expertise in the methods, techniques and approaches required to conduct a successful PhD, the NWDTC offers a unique setting to further your career.
Applicants for 1+3 training typically do not hold a Masters degree or relevant research training experience. Following successful completion of the Masters, trainees progress onto a 3-year PhD study - the focus of which may have developed during their Masters.
+3 applicants are expected to have a solid foundation in the research methods necessary to excel on the PhD, and so typically hold a related Masters (MSc/MRes). In exceptional cases substantial (>2 years) relevant professional training can compensate for the lack of a Masters degree.
ESRC funding provides full support for UK/EU tuition fees, an annual tax-free maintenance stipend (2012 rate: £13,590) and £750 annual allowance towards training costs (equipment, surveys, conference attendance etc). The training allowance is provided during the PhD phase only. Candidates must be UK/EU nationals due to the nature of the funding.
Non-UK EU nationals who have not been permanent UK residents for at least three years prior to the start of the ESRC training qualify for studentships covering their tuition fees and training costs only.
