Data Management and Information Systems in Financial Services

This is an opportunity to pursue policy and business orientated research at The School of Business and Economics at Loughborough University.

The Studentship is open to home/EU and international/overseas students. It will run for 3 years, from either October 2013 or January 2014, and it includes:

  • A fee waiver equivalent to the home/EU rate*
  • A stipend of £13,726 p.a. for three years

* Please note that international/overseas students will be required to find funding to cover the difference between home/EU fees.

About the project:

Inaccessible, incompatible and incomplete data and fragmented internal information systems are a major source of inefficiency in financial firms. They also prevent management and regulators understanding fully risks to both individual institutions and to the financial system.

The student will be part of a team at the Centre for Post-Crisis Finance, working with both industry and regulatory authorities, studying these problems and how best to address them. They will be registered as part of the Business PhD program at the School of Business and Economics.  They will be expected in their first year to write a literature review addressing the opportunities arising from adopting better information systems and the business, organisational and strategic reasons why the adoption of efficient information systems has been relatively slow in financial services when compared to other industries.

The subsequent research is expected to involve case study, interviews and survey work on specific business issues surrounding upgrading and standardisation of information systems in financial firms and financial services markets. While the exact focus of the research is yet to be determined the supervisors have a particular interest in flexible and agile approaches to the management of information systems, their application to cost reduction and quality improvement and use in risk management and regulation.

Supervisory team:

Professor Guy FitzGerald, Professor of Information Systems, School of Business and Economics

Professor Maximilian Hall, Professor of Banking and Financial Regulation, School of Business and Economics
