The National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRCâ¢) is a state-of-the-art engineering facility for postgraduate training and industry led research. A joint effort by Brunel University and a world leading research institution TWI, the Centre will carry out cutting edge research and deliver highly qualified training for future research leaders in the field of structural integrity.
The Electron Beam (EB) Section at TWI is focused on developing electron beam welding and materials processing for a wide range of applications. The Section is involved in promoting the use of electron beam welding for large, thick section structures such as offshore wind turbine foundations, power plant and chemical engineering plant.
TWI has a unique position in high power electron beam welding, owning and licensing the use of EB technologies for thick section applications.
Three fully funded PhD studentships are available for suitable candidates with strong interest in fundamental and applied research in the areas of Electron Beam Gun Design, Magnetism and Electron Beam Welding and Electron Beam Probing for Quality Assurance. These projects will be jointly supervised by Brunel Academics and TWI Scientists. The research will be carried out in TWI Ltd based in Great Abington, Cambridge. The projects are as follows:
PhD in Physics of Electron Beam Gun Design
PhD in Magnetism and Electron Beam Welding
PhD in Electron Beam Probing for Quality Assurance
Applicants should have or expect to obtain the equivalent of a 2.1 or first class undergraduate degree in engineering or physics and should have excelled in previous study of physics, electronics, and/or mathematics. A postgraduate degree in these subject areas is also desirable, but not a necessity. Due to funding restrictions applicants should be UK citizens, or EU citizens who have been resident in the UK for the three years preceding the date of application.
To apply, please send CV and transcript of university study with a covering letter specifying the area of interest and two referees to the following contacts. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interview. For enquiries, please contact: Professor W Balachandran at Brunel University (emstwwb@brunel.ac.uk/ Tel: 01895 265774), or Colin Ribton at TWI (colin.ribton@twi.co.uk / Tel: 01223 899000)
