PhD Studentship Biomass Gasification Through Diesel Engine Exhaust Gas Recirculation – A Positive Feedback Loop

This is a call for applications for a funded PhD studentship at the School of Engineering, University of Lincoln, in biomass gasification.  Environmental preservation and energy supply concerns are leading to a push for alternative fuels that are both green and sustainable.  Biomass is a renewable low-carbon energy source that can be utilised in the heating, electricity and transport sectors.

This research will be aimed at small-scale distributed power systems to utilise the bio mass at a more local level thus avoiding transportation costs and associated pollution.

The project will consider the coupling of biomass gasification and diesel exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in a positive feed-back loop with the use of a dual fuel engine.  In addition to being considered a CO2 neutral fuel, the low sulphur content in biomass may lead to a reduction in sulphur and particulate matter emissions.  Engine emissions will further improve with the introduction of biomass as the steam produced from the water content in the biomass will reduce flame temperatures and lower NOx emission levels.  The work will involve fundamental studies of fuel behaviour and kinetics via thermogravimetry and also larger scale-up with a 2 litre CI engine with an over-all aim of producing a practical working demonstration product.  Given the natural “positive feedback” response of the biomass gasification process system control development will also be an important and challenging aspect of the work.

The candidates should have an honours degree (minimum 2.1) or a Master's degree in engineering or a physical science, and be able to demonstrate strong mathematical and analytical skills. Good laboratory and cross-disciplinary skills are also required.

The three year studentship will cover student fees (up to the value of UK fees) and give a tax-free stipend of £10,000 per annum, and is available to candidates of all nationalities. There are further opportunities within the School for the successful candidate to supplement the tax-free stipend.
