Multi-disciplinary approaches are central to all large aerospace projects since they inevitably involve issues from aerodynamics, structures, loads, costing, manufacture, etc. In previous work the University collaborated with Airbus to build a design framework for concurrent computation of wing design analyses based on a shared blackboard approach for data-interchange. In this project the deployment of hi-fidelity domain analysis codes in this flexible optimization framework will be studied. Key aspects of this work will focus on geometry control and its linkage to multiple disparate analysis codes and their meshing tools. The approach to be used will allow each domain to alter the overall geometry independently during combined development work with the aim being to seek convergence as the design evolves. Thus this project will focus on the simultaneous handling of geometry creation for alternate design points during optimization against multiple goals.
The project will commence with six months of study in Southampton before transfer to Airbus Filton. It will then be based in Filton for two years before returning to Southampton for completion. An enhanced stipend of £17,600 per year will be payable.
