We welcome applications from motivated and highly qualified graduates for a fully funded PhD scholarship. The project is preferably in one of the two areas given below, although applications for any research area in the department are also welcome.
Solar flares, taking place in the outer layers of the solar atmosphere, are the biggest explosions in the solar system. While most of their energy is released into outer space, some of it travels down to the surface, capable of violently shaking the Sun generating acoustic waves that propagate into the interior before coming back to the surface. Such events, discovered only recently, are called sunquakes and can be seen on the solar surface as tsunami-like wavefronts accelerating outward from the point of surface impact. In this project we will adapt the helioseismic methods of sunquake detection and analysis to observations of the Sun as a star and then apply the new techniques to analyse the data from stellar asteroseismic observations, such as those from Kepler mission, to discover and analyse star-quakes.
Quantum technology seeks to turn the unique peculiarities of the quantum world into practical applications, such as quantum computing, simulation, and sensing. Just as with standard technology, the application of feedback is expected to play a critical role in the control of quantum technology. Most of the advances in quantum feedback control have come in the field of quantum optics looking at relatively simple systems. Furthermore, most experimental realisations have been of so-called measurement-based control, in which the feedback loop is essentially a classical one. This project will pursue the theory of coherent quantum control, in which both the system and the controller are quantum objects and the information to flow between them is of quantum information. A dual approach will be taken that both looks to extend formal results in the field, as well as considers applications in solid-state physics, such as quantum transport, spintronics, molecular devices and solid-state qubits.

Eligibility and Value of Scholarship This studentship is only open to UK or EU applicants, due to funding restriction. Applicants should have at least a 2.1 class BSc degree in physics, mathematics or a related discipline. The scholarship includes fees at the âhome/EU' student rate and maintenance (£13,726 in 2013/14) for three years, depending on satisfactory progress.
