PhD Studentship Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy

University of Nottingham & Rothamsted Research

BBSRC Doctoral Training Partnership

Studentships available for a 4-year Interdisciplinary PhD programme in Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy.

The University of Nottingham and Rothamsted Research are world-leading centres of excellence for research and education. We now invite applicants to join our innovative, integrated four-year PhD training programme in Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy.

The future is set for renewable and waste feedstocks to play an increasing role as a source for chemicals and energy production. The University of Nottingham is a global leader in Bioenergy, Biorenewables and Sustainable Chemistry, and has a strong focus on solving real-world problems using tools from synthetic biology, in partnership with major fuels and chemicals manufacturers and related industries.

Research projects are available across a range of topics and will be supervised by academic staff from a range of disciplines. Projects areas include:

  • Use of biological resources such as bacteria, fungi, algae, and plants and their genes and enzymes to produce and process materials, chemicals, and energy.
  • Synthetic biology approaches to manufacture chemicals and biofuels from waste.
  • Solving problems with product toxicity in microbial fermentations using both biological and process-based approaches.
  • Biocatalytic and chemical processing of biomass- and waste-derived feedstocks to produce substitutes for synthetic materials and polymers.
  • Sustainable bio-based manufacturing processes, including distributed manufacturing.

More details on research areas and supervisors can be found here: Life Sciences, Biosciences, Chemistry, Clostridia Group and Biorenewables and Bioprocessing Group.

The Doctoral Training Partnership provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary PhD training programme (see 2013 programme details) and a series of 3 mini rotation projects during Year One.

Information on the kinds of projects that are available can be found here.

Applications are invited from students with backgrounds in Bioscience, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Chemical/Biochemical/Process Engineering, Environmental Science, Pharmacy, Computer Science, Maths or related disciplines.
