PhD Studentships Domestic Abuse

Reference Number: RS/12/18

Applications are invited for a part-time PhD studentship in the School of Social Work.  The studentship is tenable for up to 6 years for a PhD (via MPhil route) [subject to satisfactory progress]. The studentship will cover the cost of tuition fees for UK/EU residents. The successful applicant will start on 1 January 2014.

Project Title: Domestic Abuse

Applicants are invited to undertake a part-time PhD on domestic abuse in the Connect Centre for International Research on Interpersonal Violence and Harm. They should select an original topic that is grounded in policy and practice concerns and that will further theoretical and conceptual understandings of domestic abuse. Knowledge in many areas of domestic abuse is limited and applicants are invited to identify a relevant area of study within this field. Domestic abuse is understood in the widest terms to include adults’ and children’s experience of domestic abuse, forced marriage, crimes of ‘honour’, and domestic abuse in same sex relationships.

Applicants may wish to consider examining models of prevention and intervention for children and adults experiencing domestic violence as there has been a proliferation of new approaches to work with children and their families, victims and perpetrators of domestic violence.

Applications are also welcomed from those examining domestic abuse in groups where there is sparse knowledge. In these instances, primary research is required before interventions can be developed and we are equally interested in studies which contribute to new knowledge in this way.

The School of Social Work at UCLan has a strong track record in national and international research on violence and harm. The successful candidate will join an established group of PhD students working within the Connect Centre. All research students receive supervision on a monthly basis and training. The successful applicant will be provided with support aimed at developing and refining the initial proposal. The supervisory team has a breadth of expertise in this field.

Applicants should have, or expect to receive a minimum of UK 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area. A research proposal is required as part of the application form.
