PhD Studentships in Geography

The School of Geography at Queen Mary, University of London, invites applications for fully funded PhD studentships commencing in September 2013. 

The studentships are for applicants wishing to undertake a PhD in Human or Physical Geography on a subject relating to one or more of the School's four research themes: Culture Space and Power; Earth Surface Science; Economy, Development and Social Justice; and Health, Place and Society.

Studentships may be funded from one of the sources below, dependent upon  eligibility and proposed topic. ESRC 1+3 or +3 Studentships
The School may appoint up to three fully funded ESRC Studentships through the London Social Science Doctoral Training Centre (joint between QMUL and Goldsmiths) for self-defined projects relating to the School's human geography research themes. These may be either 1+3 (one year MRes followed by three year PhD), or +3 (three year PhD only, available for those who have completed suitable masters level social science research training). Eligibility is based on UK residency, although non-UK resident EU students may apply for a fees only award. 

NERC Studentship
The School will appoint one fully funded NERC Studentship for a self-defined project relating to the interests of the School's Earth Surface Science research theme.  Applications are also invited for projects relating to more specific subject areas within that theme, details of which will be posted at: http://www.geog.qmul.ac.uk/admissions/phdadmissions/funded/index.html. 

Queen Mary Principal's PhD Studentships
The School may appoint up to four fully funded Queen Mary Principal's Studentships for self-defined projects relating to the interests of any of the School's human or physical geography research themes outlined above. Applications are also invited for projects that relate to more specific subject areas within these themes, details to be posted at http://www.geog.qmul.ac.uk/admissions/phdadmissions/funded/index.html; and for projects that involve interdisciplinary connections with other schools and research strengths within Queen Mary. These studentships are open to UK, EU and international students and cover fees and maintenance at the research council rate for London (currently £15,590 per year).

The School of Geography at Queen Mary, University of London is internationally recognised as a center of research excellence and was ranked joint first amongst UK Geography departments in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. The School attracts the very best PhD candidates from around the world, and research students are an integral part of its research culture. In recognition of the excellence of our graduate training and supervision, the School is awarded studentships from NERC  and the AHRC (Block Grant and CDA schemes), and is part of the ESRC-funded London Social Science Doctoral Training Centre (a collaboration between Queen Mary and Goldsmiths).
