PhD studentships in the Arts and Humanities

Northern Bridge is offering approximately fifty fully-funded PhD studentships for 2016 entry. The studentships are open to outstanding postgraduate researchers across the full range of Arts and Humanities subjects, including Creative Practice disciplines.

The Partnership is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. It brings together the cutting-edge expertise and exceptional resources of Newcastle University, Durham University and Queen’s University Belfast and their strategic partners. Northern Bridge students benefit from supervision, training and development of the highest quality, tailored to the needs of twenty-first-century researchers.

Northern Bridge invites applications in the following subject areas, and strongly encourages interdisciplinary projects encompassing two or more of these:

  • Cultural Studies
  • Drama and Theatre Studies
  • English Language and Literature
  • Ethnography and Anthropology*
  • Film History, Theory and Criticism

  • Interpreting and Translation
  • Law and Legal Studies*
  • Linguistics
  • Museum Studies
  • Music
  • Philosophy
  • Political Science and International Studies (Diplomacy & International Relations)*
  • Russian Studies
  • Theology, Divinity and Religion
  • Visual Arts

The Award

We provide financial support over the duration of study, including payment of tuition fees and a doctoral stipend at the UK Research Councils’ minimum level of £14,057 per annum for 2016.

Eligibility

Applicants for Northern Bridge studentships will usually hold a first-class or good upper-second undergraduate degree and performance at or around distinction level in a Master’s degree.

Applicants must be United Kingdom citizens or residents of another European Union country. European Union applicants who have not been resident in the UK for the three years prior to the start of their studentship are eligible for a fees-only award from the AHRC.
