Location: Highfield Campus The Scholarship Details: The University of Southampton and the Centre for Web Science Doctoral Training are offering a fully-funded integrated PhD studentship to start on the 29^th September 2014. The integrated PhD is a one year MSc followed by a 3 year PhD. This four-year PhD in Web Science will equip students to become leaders in the emerging Digital Economy. The course begins with a one-year taught Masters to give a broad basis for understanding the technology of the Web and the social context in which the technology operates. The remaining three year research programme is jointly supervised by two faculties and may combine a wide range of disciplines ranging from Computer Science, Information Technology, Law, Economics, Sociology, Psychology, Humanities, Management, Education or Geography as appropriate to the interdisciplinary research interests of the individual student. Web Science at Southampton is directed by Professor Dame Wendy Hall, Professor Leslie Carr, Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt and Dr Leif Isaksen with Visiting Professor Sir Tim Berners-Lee.?The Web Science Centre for Doctoral Training is part of an international network of Web Science research centres, offering summer schools, workshops and opportunities for international collaboration. The successful candidate is likely to have the following qualifications:

A 1^st or high 2:1 degree in a relevant social science/computer science discipline and/or upper second degree with a related Masters

Experience and an interest in multi- and interdisciplinary research

THE AWARD:A full studentship covers both the cost of tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and a stipend. In the 2014/2015 academic year, the stipend is £13,863 which is tax-free and paid in four installments each year.?The studentship is available to support four years' full-time study, subject to satisfactory progress. ELIGIBILITY:To be eligible for a full scholarship (stipend and fees), a student must have: Settled status in the UK, meaning they have no restrictions on how long they can stay. and Been ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the grant. This means they must have been normally residing in the UK (apart from temporary or occasional absences). and Not been residing in the UK wholly or mainly for the purpose of full-time education. (This does not apply to UK or EU nationals). To be eligible for a fees only award: Students from EU countries other than the UK are generally eligible for a fees-only award. To be eligible for a fees-only award, a student must be ordinarily resident in a member state of the EU, in the same way as UK students must be ordinarily resident in the UK. Note: These eligibility criteria are based on the Education (Fees and Awards) Regulations 1997 and subsequent amendments, covering England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
