2026 American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship
The American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship (AU EGLS) is designed to advance educational access and promote global diversity. It provides full financial coverage for international students pursuing an undergraduate degree at American University in Washington, D.C.
The scholarship supports high-achieving students who are dedicated to positive civic and social change and who demonstrate leadership, academic excellence, and a commitment to serving their communities. It is renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study, provided the student maintains strong academic performance.

Eligibility Criteria for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be an international student who has overcome significant challenges and comes from an underrepresented or economically disadvantaged background.
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.8 (on a 4.0 scale) or be in the top 10% of their graduating class from grades 9 through 12.
- Demonstrate a strong record of leadership, volunteerism, and community service, with a clear commitment to improving conditions in their home country.
- Meet one of the following English language proficiency standards:
- TOEFL iBT: 95+ (minimum 20 in each section)
- TOEFL Paper-based (post-May 31, 2023): Subscores of 24+
- IELTS: 7.0+ overall (minimum 6.0 in each band)
- SAT Reading: 33+
- ACT English: 29+
- PTE: 65+
- Duolingo English Test: 125+ (minimum 115 in each subscore)
- Cambridge Assessment English: 185+ (each subscore at least 169)
- Be currently enrolled in secondary/high school and expected to graduate by June 2025.
- For IB students: Must earn a full IB diploma with at least three Higher Level (HL) subjects.
- For A-Level students: Must complete at least three A-Level subjects and 13 years of education by August 2025.
Scholarship Benefits
- The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship covers full tuition, room, and board for one exceptional international student who will require a non-immigrant visa (preferably F-1 or J-1) to study in the U.S.

In addition, American University offers up to eight partial AU EGL scholarships, each valued at up to $40,000 per year.
How to Apply for the 2026 AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship
Follow these steps to apply:
- Visit the official American University scholarship webpage using the link provided.
- Complete and submit the Common Application or Coalition Application, including all required documents, by January 15, 2026.
- After completing Step 1, submit the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship application and required essays through your applicant portal by the special deadline of January 15, 2026.
Late applications will not be considered, so ensure all materials are submitted on time.
