The MS International Federation (MSIF) is now accepting applications for the 2026 McDonald Fellowship, a prestigious program designed to support early-career researchers from low- and middle-income countries working in the field of multiple sclerosis (MS).
This fully funded fellowship offers two years of international research placement and provides an annual grant of €55,000 to help advance global MS research and improve patient care.
About the Fellowship
The McDonald Fellowship enables talented early-career MS researchers to undertake research at a host institution outside their home country. Fellows either:

Acquire advanced expertise in MS research, or
-
Collaborate on joint projects with global research teams.
After the fellowship, recipients are expected to apply their new skills and networks to continue contributing to MS research and care within low- and middle-income countries.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the 2026 McDonald Fellowship, applicants must:

Hold a postgraduate degree in a field relevant to MS (at least MSc, ideally PhD/MD).

Be a citizen of a low- or middle-income country, as defined by the World Bank.

Have research interests focused on multiple sclerosis.

Fulfill one of the following conditions:

Be currently working or studying in a low- or middle-income country.

Be working/studying in another country, having started the project within 6 months of applying.

Be studying abroad on a Du Pré grant project supported by MSIF.
Fellowship Benefits
Successful applicants will receive:

A two-year grant of approximately €55,000 per year to cover:

Application Process (Step-by-Step)
Interested candidates should follow these steps to apply:

Identify a research project and field of interest.

Contact a host institution and agree on a joint project with a potential supervisor.

Complete all sections of the online application form.
After submission, your host supervisor will be invited to submit a supporting statement through the same portal.
Request three referees to send reference letters directly to:
research@msif.org
