International scholarships are available for applicants seeking places on the MSc Medical Mycology for September 2013 entry. The scholarships are directed at medical and healthcare science graduates from âresource-limitedâ* non-EU countries wishing to develop their skills as mycologists. Funding provides full sponsorship of the MSc tuition fee and £16,550 living allowance (stipend).
Over 300 million people are affected by serious fungal infections worldwide, and in excess of 1.3 million people die from one every year. Global incidence of fungal diseases is on the rise due to increases in susceptible patients (cancer therapies, organ transplantation, chronic lung diseases) and possibly climate change. Despite major recent developments in diagnostics and treatments, the availability of modern diagnostic methods and trained individuals in fungal disease remains very poor in many parts of the world.
The Master of Science (MSc) in Medical Mycology is a newly launched one-year full time postgraduate programme providing outstanding training in the epidemiological, diagnostic, medical and molecular aspects of fungal disease and immunity to infection. It is unique within Europe, providing trainees with the skills to develop diagnostic services in global settings. This is supported through extended training within our laboratory and clinical settings, such as the NHS Mycology Reference Centre Manchester (MRCM) and National Aspergillosis Centre.
Training is provided using a combination of methods such as lectures, seminars, practicals, eLearning, journal clubs and poster presentations. Over a sequence of eight taught units and an extended research project students are provided with direct experience of the technical, practical, fungal and medical aspects of mycology.
These scholarships are aimed at international graduates within the medical and healthcare sciences seeking to develop fungal infection diagnostic services with a global reach. Further information on the MSc, including academic entry requirements and course units, can be found on our website.

Individuals wishing to be considered for a scholarship for 2013 entry should apply for the MSc following the guidance on our website. Alongside the application, an additional covering statement (maximum 750 words) should be included explaining how you intend to use the scholarship to improve the diagnostics and care of patients with fungal infections in your home country and/or globally.
Applications are invited up to and including Monday 5 August 2013. Interviews with shortlisted candidates will be held mid-August. Places for 2013 entry are limited so early application is encouraged.
