Energy supply networks are beginning a radical transformation which includes: the introduction of new components, new network configurations, new design and operation philosophies as well as new incentives and business models. This revolution is in response to energy demand growth, climate change and fuel security concerns. It is influenced by advances in low carbon technologies including renewable energy technologies, information and communication technologies and is supported by government energy policies and strategies. This revolution is affecting all energy vectors, e.g., electric power networks, heating and cooling systems, gas and hydrogen networks, and is significantly increasing the coupling and interactions between them. For example, the Low Carbon Transition Plan and subsequent more detailed analyses made it clear that gas will be used increasingly for electricity generation up to at least 2020.
The proposed PhD research project will investigate the key technologies of the analysis and optimal design of integrated multiâvector energy networks and the outcome will inform the development of the sustainable low carbon energy system in the UK. Industrial supervision will be provided by Toshiba Research Europe Limited in Bristol where the student will also spend his industrial placement with during the course of the project.
Eligibility
First class degree or a good 2.1 and/or an appropriate Masterâs level qualification (or their equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent).
Due to funding restrictions this studentships is open to UK and EU students. To be eligible for the full award, EU Nationals must have been in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the course, including for the purposes of full-time education. Those who do not meet the residency requirement are eligible for a fees only award, if they have been ordinarily resident in the EU for at least 3 years prior to the start of the course.
Funding
Tuition fees and a stipend (£13,726 in 2013/14).
