The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute conducts cutting edge genomic research on an unprecedented scale and our laboratory teams play a vital role in enabling and supporting our science.
The Cancer Genetics and Genomics programme is currently looking for an enthusiastic and motivated research assistant to carry out routine laboratory protocols and procedures. Successful candidates will have graduated with a science degree; previous laboratory experience will be advantageous.
It will be expected that the successful candidate will be able to work independently or as a team where required in order to fulfill team objectives, they will need a keen eye for detail and are able to use initiative in appropriate settings. Working as part of the wider support team they will be helping to provide laboratory solutions and support for the head of the Cancer Genetics and Genomics Programme and the faculty team.
Essential Skills
- Science degree in biological sciences
- An excellent theoretical understanding in molecular biology strategies and techniques e.g., nucleic acid isolation and purification and PCR.
- Theoretical understanding of genome engineering techniques including CRISPR/Cas9
- Capable of working to a schedule and delivering a variety of tasks simultaneously to agreed deadlines and standards
- Able to take instruction, working to guidelines and SOP's as well as use initiative in appropriate settings
- To work both as part of a team and also independently once appropriate training and guidance have been provided
- Good communication skills to allow accurate information to be exchanged
- Good computer skills in the use of office software (e.g. Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
Ideal Skills
- Experience of mammalian cell culture
- Practical experience with genome engineering techniques including CRISPR/Cas9
- Practical experience of genotyping techniques (e.g. qPCR, HRMA)
