Post-doctoral Research Assistant in Cell Biology

Full time - 2 year fixed term

This Biotechnology and Biological Research Council funded position with Dr Anthony Albert focuses on activation mechanisms and functions on transient receptor potential (TRP) and Orai1 channels in the vasculature, which are legitimate therapeutic targets for hypertension and atherosclerosis. These aims will be studied using a multi-disciplinary approach involving standard molecular and biochemical methods such as cell culture, qPCR, siRNA, Western blotting, proximity ligation assay, and immunocytochemistry. There will be opportunities to learn electrophysiological and functional assay techniques such as patch clamp recording and wire myography.

The project builds upon extensive studies by Dr Albert’s group (see Shi et al 2016, Store depletion induces Gαq-mediated PLCβ1 activity to stimulate TRPC1 channels in vascular smooth muscle cells. FASEB J; 30, 702-15).

The successful applicant will likely have experience in at least one of above techniques, although full training will be given in all techniques. A background in ion channels is not necessarily important, what is more important is evidence of an interest and enthusiasm for understanding cell biology.

The post will require a person to play an active role in experimental planning, data analysis, manuscript preparation, and data presentation at national and international conferences. In addition, the applicant will also contribute to the development of research ideas and collaborations. They will be been given the opportunity to gain supervisory experience by being involved in the day to day supervision of BSc and PhD project students within the group.

The starting salary for this post is between £31,656 and £37,768 plus £2,943 London Allowance per annum.

The maximum starting salary for the post is £33,574 plus £2,943 London allowance.
