Research Associate - Alzheimer’s disease: Development of novel therapeutic biomarkers

Applications are invited for a highly motivated scientist to join a small research team headed by Prof John Collinge FRS, Department of Neurodegenerative Disease and MRC Prion Unit, UCL Institute of Neurology at Queen Square in Central London, working in collaboration with Prof Dominic Walsh at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School (see Frier et al Nature Communications 2011) and Dr Mark Farrow (MRC Prion Unit). The post is part of a major award in Experimental Neurology to UCL from the Wolfson Foundation.

The MRC Prion Unit (www.prion.ucl.ac.uk) and Department of Neurodegenerative Disease (www.ucl.ac.uk/ion/departments/neurodegeneration) are internationally recognised in the study of neurodegenerative diseases and occupy purpose-built facilities. Work within the Department is highly multidisciplinary and spans structural and molecular biology, human and mouse genetics, cellular and animal models, small molecule and immunotherapeutics, and clinical research.

The post-holder will study molecular mechanisms of protein aggregation and adapt state-of-the-art biochemical and cellular screening assays, developed recently in the MRC Prion Unit, to detect aggregated Alzheimer’s disease-related proteins in blood and other tissues. The post-holder will have access to advanced analytical platforms, robotic systems and comprehensive technical support.

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant area, with knowledge of biochemistry and cellular biology and experience of protein immunoassays or biomarker detection. A good understanding of protein aggregation phenomena and cellular pathways involved in neurodegenerative disease is essential, as is knowledge and experience of general biochemical and cell biology techniques including western blotting, cell culture and molecular cloning. Experience of medium or high-throughput assays is desirable.

The post is available immediately and is funded for one year in the first instance by a grant from the Wolfson Foundation. Starting salary on the UCL Grade 7 scale in the range £33,686 - £40,716 pa including London allowance, superannuable.
