UBC Public Scholars Award – Now Open for Applications
The University of British Columbia (UBC) is now accepting applications for the UBC Public Scholars Award, offering a unique opportunity for qualified candidates to study in Canada.
This prestigious award provides $20,000 per student to support both living expenses and research activities. It is part of the UBC Public Scholars Initiative (PSI), which aims to foster connections, build a strong academic community, and support doctoral students committed to research with a public impact.
For this year, funding is available for 30-35 new students, with the possibility of renewal for a second year, subject to new PSI funding.
UBC Public Scholars Award – Eligibility and Benefits
Eligibility Criteria (2025)
The UBC Public Scholars Award is open to:

UBC Vancouver doctoral students (PhD, EdD, and DMA) in years 1-5.

UBC Okanagan doctoral students in years 1-5.

Applicants must have completed no more than 48 months of doctoral study as of August 31, 2025.

Must be registered in a UBC doctoral program as of September 1, 2025.

6th-year students (48-60 months) may be considered only in exceptional cases.

All students, faculty, and collaborators must complete a questionnaire at the end of their funding period.

Student dissertations, completion rates, and career outcomes will be reviewed as part of the program assessment.
Award Duration and Benefits

The UBC Public Scholars Award provides a total of $20,000 per student, disbursed as two payments of $10,000. This funding supports innovative and collaborative research that students would otherwise be unable to pursue.

Funding may be used for:

Research allowance, including professional development or travel expenses relevant to the project.

Student stipend, if the student’s current funding does not support alternative projects.
