United Nations–Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2026
A Fully Funded 9-Month Fellowship in Ocean Affairs, International Law & Sustainable Development
The United Nations–Nippon Foundation Fellowship Programme is a prestigious, fully funded initiative that empowers professionals from developing countries to advance their expertise in ocean affairs, international law, and sustainable development.
The program includes advanced academic research at globally recognized institutions and a training placement at the UN Headquarters in New York. It is jointly supported by the United Nations and The Nippon Foundation of Japan.
Fellowship Structure
The 9-month fellowship is divided into two phases:

Phase One (3 months) – Advanced academic research and training at a partner university or institution

Phase Two (6 months) – Practical training and policy development experience at the United Nations Headquarters in New York

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the 2026 UN–Nippon Foundation Fellowship, applicants must:

Hold at least a first-level university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent)

Be between 25 and 40 years old

Be currently employed by a government, NGO, or academic institution

Demonstrate ability to conduct independent academic research
-
Show strong commitment to advancing policy or governance in ocean affairs, international law, or sustainable development

Be from a developing country (strongly encouraged)
