We are seeking high quality candidates for a Research Associate position based in the School of Materials and also working in the Institute for Human Development researching into the development of a novel Kidney-on-a-Chip concept.
This position forms part of an interdisciplinary, cross-Faculty, BBSRC-funded project awarded to the School of Materials and School of Biological Sciences.
The project seeks to develop organ-on-a-chip technology for a more reliable and realistic in vitro kidney model with potential applications in nephrotoxicity studies.
The idea is to generate 3D multi cell type structures without the need for a scaffold, using a "cell sheet engineering" approach, that when assembled on a chip / fluid array will produce a more physiologically accurate in vitro model of both the glomerulus and proximal tubule, the latter has been identified as a key target by industry for improved nephrotoxicity studies.
The proposed technology will better mimic the internal geometry of the kidney and by developing a model containing two types of cell will more realistically match the glomerular filtration structures present in the organ.
You must have a PhD in Cell Biology, Biomaterials, Biochemistry, Bioengineering or equivalent experience in these or a related discipline. Experience of 3D cell culture techniques would be an advantage.
As well as an excellent research track record you must have good communication, time management and team working skills. You should demonstrate an aptitude for independent research and the ability to assist in the supervision of graduate students.
The post is available from October 2016 for 14 months.
